The Story
These vessels are completed in two stages. First they are thrown, trimmed, glazed and fired in the studio. Once cooled, each one is finished by hand with woven reed and palm leaves. The weaving introduces a softer texture to the ceramic, creating a beautiful balance between earth, fibre and form.
The Making Process
This vessel began with 2,5 kg of brown stoneware clay, thrown by hand on the potter's wheel. The first half is then left to dry slowly for a day and then put back on the wheel for trimming and adding a coil of cream stoneware clay which is then pulled by hand to add height. The piece is then left out to dry for several days before being bisque-fired to 1040°C. Once cooled, the inside and half of the outside of the piece was hand-dipped in a high-fire glaze. Then returned to the kiln and fired to 1260°C, creating a strong, durable, non-porous, food-safe finish. Finally, the foot was carefully sanded by hand to leave a smooth surface that feels gentle against the table.
