The Story
The Breakfast Bowl began with a simple question: If I wasn't a potter, what would I want to have in my own home? I've always imagined a home filled with natural materials, textures, and objects that feel as though they've always belonged there. This bowl was designed with that vision in mind. Its shape was inspired by a childhood memory of Heidi, where her grandfather served melted cheese and fresh bread in simple hand-carved wooden bowls. Rather than looking them up again, I chose to trust the memory. I wanted to recreate not the bowl itself, but the feeling it left behind. The result is a bowl made for slow breakfasts, shared meals, and the everyday rituals that quietly become our favourite memories.
The Making Process
Each Breakfast Bowl begins with 500 g of stoneware clay and is thrown and trimmed by hand on the potter's wheel. During the trimming process, each bowl is given a delicate foot ring using a damp leather strip, creating the soft, lifted profile that has become one of the bowl's defining characteristics. The bowls are then left to dry slowly for several days before being bisque-fired to 1040°C. Once cooled, each piece is hand-dipped in a transparent high-fire glaze that allows the natural beauty of the clay to remain visible. They are then returned to the kiln and fired to 1260°C, creating a strong, durable, non-porous, food-safe finish. Finally, the foot of each bowl is carefully sanded by hand to leave a smooth surface that feels gentle against the table.
